Types of Fast Bowling in Cricket

Dippers in Cricket

In Fast bowling generally we do have four types of bowling. They are.

  • Fast or Quick bowling.
  • Fast Medium.
  • Medium Fast.
  • Slow Medium.

FAST OR QUICK BOWLERS

The bowlers who bowl at a speed ranging from minimum 140 kph to maximum 160 kph or more (generally) or The bowlers who maintain their speeds regularly in 140’s and 150’s.

These bowlers are Quick, Fast, and Furious. They depend on Speed, Quick and Bounce most of the times. They purely depend on speed, quickness, bounce factors but not the swing, of course swing will be a part of each and every fast bowler. Even on slow dry cricket pitches which really doesn’t support the pace, it is the duty of these kind of bowlers who should or will generate the pace by hitting the deck hard or by running hard with aggressive bowling action ending with extended follow through or may be using other tactics. These genuine quick fast bowlers will always maintain their average bowling speeds in 140’s and 150’s most frequently.

Example :

Shoaib Akthar, Bret Lee, Shane Bond, Shaun Tait, Geoff Thompson, Kemar roach, Dale steyn etc

FAST MEDIUM BOWLERS

The bowlers who bowl at a speed ranging from minimum 130 kph to maximum 150 kph. (Generally) or The bowlers who maintain their speeds regularly in 130’s and 140’s.

These bowlers are Fast but not Quick as Quick bowlers. Unlike genuine fast bowlers they evenly depend on Speed, Bounce, and Swing most of the times. These type of Fast bowlers will always maintain their average bowling speeds in 130’s and 140’s most frequently.

Example :

Zaheer Khan, Dilharo Fernando, Mitchel Johnson, Mohammed Sami, Andrew Nell, Makaya Ntini, James Anderson, sreesanth, Waqar younis, Rp Singh etc

MEDIUM FAST BOWLERS

The bowlers who bowl at a speed ranging from minimum 120 kph to maximum 140 kph. (Generally) or The bowlers who maintain their speeds regularly in 120’s and 130’s.

These bowlers are fast but they are mostly Swing based bowlers. They are not Quick as Quick bowlers. They give importance to Swing rather than speed. And at the end of the day if the pitches don’t support the swing, well these guys will have to really depend on line and length and slower deliveries or other options. These type of fast bowlers will always maintain their average bowling speeds in 120’s and 130’s most frequently.

Example :

Shaun Pollock, Wasim Akram, Chaminda vaas, Irfan Pathan, Glenn Mcgrath, Mohammed Asif etc.

SLOW MEDIUM BOWLERS

The bowlers who bowl at a speed ranging from minimum 110 kph to maximum 130 kph. (Generally) or The bowlers who maintain their speeds regularly in 110’s and 120’s.

These bowlers are much slower than regular Fast Bowlers. They purely depend on Line and Length, some times swing, slow pace but not Speed most of the times. These type of bowlers will always maintain their average bowling speeds in 110’s and 120’s most frequently.

Example

Sourav Ganguly, Paul Colling wood, James Hopes, Steve Waugh, Robin Sing, Salim malik etc.
