Bhramari Pranayama - Humming Bee

Introduction:

Bhramari Pranayama is also known as humming bee breathing technique. Bhramari means a Indian humming black bee and pranayama means breathing technique.

The main aim of this pranayama is you got to have deep long breaths inwards and make a sound like humming bee when you are actually exhaling by blocking your ears and closing your eyes.

Procedure:

Initially try to sit erectly such that your spine has to be straight, head in still pose should be moved accordingly and sitting position can be in padmasana or artha padmasana or vajrasana or sukasana or siddhasana.

Now close your eyes and try to block your ears by placing tips of your thumbs over the ears. Don’t pressure the ears but should be gentle. Now place your index fingers on your forehead, middle and ring fingers on your eye brows, the little fingers at sides of your nostrils.

Now take a long breath inwards by filling your lungs, now exhale slowly as much as you can by making humming bee sound. The sound has to be steady, clear, smooth and continuous.

The ratio of this process should be in 1:2, which means, if time taken for breath in is 1 second then breath out should be 2 seconds, if you are a beginner the ratio can be in 1:1 ratio. Try to increase the frequency to 1:4 or 1: 8 once you are consistent in your practice. Do it slowly and always concentrate on your breathing’s.

And you can also make a sound while inhaling but it is a difficult task, atleast initiate the process once you are practiced well.

Humming will cause vibrations on the top of your head. Feel the sense of calmness and observe the flow of energy in your body. To improve your meditation further try to recite OMKARA.

Breathing process has to be for at least 5 to 10 times and 5 mins on a day.

Now gently release your fingers and open your eyes slowly. Relax in gyana mudra for at least 3 to 4 mins.
