LBW is abbreviated as Leg Before Wicket in Cricket.
Before understanding what actually is LBW and when it will be given, you need to understand the concept of Line.
SO WHAT IS LINE ?
There are three stumps the first one is off stump, second one is middle stump and third one is Leg stump. We have two ends one is Bowling end and the other one is Batting end.
So now draw a straight long 22 yard rectangle stretching from Batting end to Bowling end such that the three stumps are covered. So this rectangle stretching from Batting end to Bowling end is called as LINE.
Now the conditions for LBW. Generally we can divide the conditions for LBWs in two ways.
- Absolute conditions for giving LBWs
- Absolute conditions for not giving LBWs
Absolute conditions for giving LBWs
The first and basic thing for LBWs is the ball has to be pitched in line or outside the line. Here outside the line means outside the off stump. Hitting the line means it can hit on off stump or middle stump or Leg stump line.
The ball has to hit the wickets after hitting the line or out side the off stump line. After the ball hitting the pitch, the word ” Imagination ” is used thinking that as if there was no batsman, assuming yourself whether it was going to hit the stumps or not.
Hawk eye a special new technical development has been made into modern cricket to know whether the ball ‘ will be going to hit the stumps or not ‘ after hitting the pitch.
The ball has to hit the pads first. Here pads means it can be either left or right pad. And also here the ball hitting the pads first means, the ball has to hit the pad first before hitting the bat. If it hits the bat first and then hitting a pad second, then you will be not given out. But if it hits the pad 1st and then hitting a bat second after hitting the line or outside the off stump line, you will be given out.
Absolute conditions for not giving LBWs
If a ball pitches outside the Leg stumps, then absolutely there will be no chance for the umpire to give him a out.
Mind you even if the ball hits the stumps after hitting the pitch outside the Leg stumps, he will not be given out.
If a ball doesn’t hit the stumps after hitting the pitch in line or outside the off stump line then absolutely there will be no chance for the umpire to give him a out.
Mind you even if the ball pitches in line or outside the off stump line he will not be given out.
If a ball hits the bat first and then hitting the pad second, then absolutely there will be no chance for the umpire to give him a out.
Mind you even if the ball pitches in line or outside the off stump line, and hits the stumps, he will not be given out.
THERE ARE ALSO OTHER CONDITIONS FOR GIVING THE BATSMAN LBW OR NOT.
- When a batsman playing a shot.
- When a batsman doesn’t offer a shot.
When a batsman playing a shot
When a batsman plays a shot in such a way that he stretches his front leg outside the line or outside the off stump, then now if the impact of the ball with the pad is in outside the line or outside the off stump after the ball hitting the pitch in line or outside the off stump line then absolutely there will be no chance for the umpire to give him a out.
Mind you even if the ball pitches in line or outside the off stump line and hits the stumps he will not be given out
When a batsman doesn’t offer a shot
If a batsman doesn’t play a shot he will be in big trouble always. So now when a batsman doesn’t play a shot or doesn’t offer a shot in such way that he stretches his front leg outside the line or outside the off stump, so now if the ball hits the stumps after hitting the pitch in line or outside the off stump line, now even if the impact of the ball with the pad is in outside the line or outside the off stump he will be given out undoubtedly by umpires.
Now if a batsman is within the line or in line and doesn’t offer a shot, so now if the ball hits the stumps after hitting the pitch in line or outside the off stump line he will be given out undoubtedly by umpires.
The reason is simple for giving him out, when a batsman doesn’t offer a shot , the impact of the ball with the pad in outside the line or outside the off stump line will not be considered , now if a ball pitches in line or outside the off stump line and hits the stumps he will be given out.
AT THE END OF THE DAY, THESE CONDITIONS HAS TO BE HAPPEN FOR LBW’S
THEY ARE :
- The ball has to be pitched in line or outside the off stump line.
- The ball should hit the stumps .
- The ball shouldn’t pitch outside the Leg stump.
- There should be no impact of the ball with the pad in outside the line or outside the off stump line when a batsman plays a shot (when a batsman doesn’t play a shot the impact of the ball with pad in outside the off stump line will not be considered).
- And the ball has to hit the pad first.
