How to Make a Upma dish – Semolina – Indian Breakfast
Ingredients required for Semolina:
- Sufficient curry leaves
- Sufficient coriander leaves
- 3 spoons of ground nuts
- One Tomato
- One Tsp of Turmeric powder
- Sufficient salt
- One onion
- One cup of Semolina – Upma ravva
- One Tsp of Ginger garlic paste.
- Sufficient oil.
- Sufficient mustard and cumin seeds.
- 3 Green chili
- 2 Cups of water (The ratio between upma ravva and water has to be 1:2 or 1:2.5)
How to Make a Upma dish:
Initially heat the pan and fry the semolina for one or two minutes by adding sufficient oil in a pan.
After completion of frying, now once again add the sufficient oil, once the oil is heated put the stove in low flame and add the mustard seeds and cumin seeds for tempering.
Once the tempering is done, add ground nuts and fry them properly for atleast one minute in low flame.
Once the ground nuts are fried properly, add curry leaves, green chili and onions, allow them to fry thoroughly for at least one or two minutes in low flame.
After completion of one or two minutes add ginger garlic paste and turmeric powder, make sure that, the paste is distributed evenly and nicely. The reason for adding the turmeric powder is simply because it just checks the bacteria if there are any. Once every thing is mixed properly add tomatoes, mix it nicely and allow for two or three minutes in low flame.
After completion of two or three minutes add two cups of water, dissolve it with ingredients nicely and allow for boiling for atleast 3 or 4 minutes in medium flame.
In between like after completion of one or two minutes add the sufficient salt and dissolve it nicely. You just cannot add the salt in final stage since salt cannot be distributed evenly once the semolina is added in water. So allow for remaining period of time which is of 2 minutes.
After completion of 2 minutes once you are sure that water is boiled, put the stove in low flame, add semolina flour slowly and evenly through out the pan, do not concentrate the flour on one area since it can turn into a single block of paste.
Slowly stir it with a spoon round and round for 30 seconds so that no single ‘block kind of paste’ should be formed. Now allow for one or two minutes in low flame.
After completion of one or two minutes once again stir the paste properly and evenly so that the semolina gets into a nice pasty shape. Well if you don’t use turmeric powder the color of semolina will be in white. This is the famous breakfast dish in southern parts of India. So allow for final one minute.
After completion of final one minute a hot and delicious semolina breakfast dish will be absolutely ready for serving, add some coriander leaves and take it into the bowl very carefully.
